It's only been a few years since I discovered the joys of gardening, so the satisfaction of harvesting the first vegetables from one's own little plot is a newcomer to my list of pleasures in life, but it's certainly more than just a little one.
A few days ago I discovered, hidden among the flourishing leaves in the garden bed, the above two zucchinis. And yesterday I found the following two small yellow cherry tomatoes nestled among the tomato plants. I can't find the words to describe how ridiculously gleeful I felt with these finds, the first pickings from my small beds. They will be preciously cooked and consumed with delilght.
Last year, due to far too much time spent working, my garden beds were more like wild, overgrown, jungles -- prolific with their gifts but completely out of my control. This year I've managed to maintain a better balance between work and everything else, so they are getting better care and rewarding me for it. Here's a little glimpse of one of my garden beds before I leave for today, this particular one full of as-yet-young melons, tomatoes, coriander, basil, beetroot and marigolds ...
